STEP 1: Affidavit Attestation

Firstly, you need to draft and finalize your main matter and then get your name change affidavit drafted with the help of any lawyer.

Once you are ready with affidavit contents, buy a Stamp paper of Minimum Rs 10 or 50 with your old name and get it attested by Public notary.

Important: If you are adding Surname other than your father or husband (in case of married lady) then the same affidavit shall be attested by 1st Class Executive magistrate like SDM or Tehsildar and rest of the process will be same.

STEP 2: Name Change Ad in Newspaper

  • 1700 Rs in case of Minor name change (Where age of applicant is below 18 Years)

  • Name change due to religion change matters Rs. 2800 (1700 + 1100)

To pay the fee you can visit https://bharatkosh.gov.in/, Select “Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs” under Purpose section, then search for SALE OF GAZETTE, add your details and amount and generate CHALLAN.

Pay that challan using any of several available online payments methods like UPI, Netbanking, Cards etc..

After payment a receipt will be generated in PDF format, download and print that file and attach it to your main file.

Now you’re ready to get your file submitted to the Gazette office.

For submission, again there are two ways;

By visting Gazette office, Delhi: If you visit personally then after submission it will take around 4-5 weeks in Gazette publication.

Submission through post or courier: If you’re sending your file via Courier or speed post then it will take minimum of 45 days to few months (as seen in few cases). Also in courier or post method you won’t be able to track what’s happening with your file as Govt of India do not provide any tracking services.

How to Download Gazette notification for name change?

Once your gazette is published you can download the same by visiting;

Navigate to Gazette directory, Select Weekly under Gazette directory option then select Part 4 under Part & Section option, select year and Submit.

You will get list of all the weekly gazettes.

Download the latest one and search for your name using “Ctrl + F”.

Now print 1st page and the page where your notification is shown, make sets and you are ready to use it wherever you want to use the same for updating or correcting your names in your documents.
